CD Reviews

Red & Gold Tour , Winter 1989
PHILIP S WOLF | SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CA. USA | 07/07/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Winter Tour (of the UK 1989) .
This Disc is a nice sampler of a Fairport show. The line-up here is Simon Nicol: Lead vocals & acoustic guitar, Dave Pegg: Bass guitar, mandolin, Vocals and funny faces. Ric Sanders: Violin. Dave Mattacks: Drums & Keyboards and Maartin Allcock plays eveything else.
The show I attended was over three hours in length at Toads Place in Portland , Maine in May 89. Lot's of new material was played, Red & Gold had not been released in the USA at time. The power and excellance of the band five feet in front of me and in top form Left a goofy grin on my face for the entire show.
This CD represents a moment in time and it is a good purchase even though more of the show SHOULD be presented here. " Bird From The Mountian ", features Dave Pegg in fine vocal form. " London River ", sounds better live than the version on " Red & Gold " . "Portmeiron" showcases Ric"s outstanding playing and stage antics.
Simon sings " From A Distance " years ahead of Bette Midler ruining the tune. Things rap up in a medley of " Lark / Matty Groves / Juggler". Of course " Meet On the Ledge " is the encore.
My copy of this is on Talking Elephant Records UK. Check out that website because it has lot's of good stuff you can't find here in America.
RECOMMENED."
