"Perhaps spearheaded by Deerhoof, bands such as Experimental Dental School, Man Man, and Battlehooch are seemingly part of a vibrant music scene and community erupting in the San Francisco Bay Area. These bands embody a punk rock aesthetic and accentuate an art rock and prog rock energy. They combine these elements into a unique, noise-rocking, avant-garde tinged sound. Though contrary to much prog and art rock, there is nothing dark or brooding or pretentious about the music. It has a fun, spontaneous feel about it all.
And although Deerhoof may be the torch bearers, Experimental Dental School are certainly one of the most distinguished bands to emerge from this scene. Hailing from Oakland CA, they've managed to create one of the most exciting albums of 2008 so far. An album that encourages repeated listens and manages to avoid predictability. It encapsulates so many of the great aspects of the music scene it has emerged from: delightfully simple melodies and hooks hidden behind dissonant guitar riffs, bubbly synthesizers and organs, whirling feedback and unexpected turns in the compositions. It's an album rich with musical ideas. And most of all, while it's not an "accessible" or "easy" album in the most traditional sense, Jane Doe Loves Me is a blast to listen to."
