Synopsis

This two-disc set includes the complete contents of Etelka Freund's Remington LP of Brahms piano music, a great collector's item. She knew the composer well. Even at 80, Freund had the power and dexterity to give an amazing performance of the difficult sonata, storming through its most virtuosic passages in a thrilling fashion. The remaining recordings come from broadcasts, and they are variable in sound quality, none of them too great. But it's fascinating to hear Freund playing music by her longtime friend Bartók, plus more Brahms, Bach, and Liszt. She was one of the greatest pianists you've never heard of, and we're lucky to have her recordings. -- Leslie Gerber

CD Reviews

A friend of Brahms who remained true to his style
Harold J. Sauer, M.D. | East Lansing, Michigan, U.S.A. | 09/05/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Etelka Freund was an original. Most of these recordings were made in the latter part of her life under less than optimal circumstances. Having them readily available is truly a special and guilty pleasure for me. Her older brother was a good friend of Brahms who brought her into the composer's circle, and Brahms rightfully admired her playing. This lends a particular authority to there performances, which are very different from those of Backhaus, for example. The nimbleness of her fingers and the speeds at which she plays are stunning, especially for an 80 year-old in performance. Listen to this album -- you won't be disappointed. For me it is one of the gems in the Pearl catalog."
