CD Reviews

Beyond category
Mark Schildberg | Houston, TX USA | 11/04/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

""Beyond category" was the highest praise a musician could get from America's greatest composer, Duke Ellington. And no better words can apply to the unique musical stylings of Juan Garcia Esquivel, an extraordinary pianist-arranger-conductor who came to prominence in the 1950s. His eccentric, wildly colorful charts bring space-age sparkle and effervescence to both traditional folk melodies and popular standards from the American songbook. His creative high point came at RCA Victor, where he released a series of magnificent albums, and here are two of the very best. Esquivel's sound is entirely his own, full of screaming brass, vocalizing choirs going "Zu Zu" and "Pow!", sliding steel-guitar chords and low-register accordion. Slip this disc into your player and hang on to your ears."
