""Live in Hamburg" captures E.S.T. better than most of the trio's studio work, for this double disc shows the breadth and scope of the band's abilities on stage. Sometimes the music morphs into some strange plays, walls of discordant sounds that are not always pleasant to listen to, but the journey to and from such places is worth taking. Each CD in this set merits a complete listen---the songs are part of a cycle, a block of music that is woven together with sly improvisation.

Each member shines in his solos but sometimes these grow a bit tedious, reminders of the excess that clogged many a double live rock album. But when the band contracts into one seamless unit, the results range from staggering power to subtle beauty. This recording is essential listening for all E.S.T. fans.
