CD Reviews

Fantasic piano player & remarkable quality CD box
Terje Biringvad | Oslo, Norway | 11/03/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Erroll Garner is probably the most distinctive jazz pianist of all time. Even though he couldn't read music but equipped with perfect pitch and a fantastic technique, Garner's famous introductions to tunes were created with such a sophistication that even his fellow accompanying musicians didn't know where he was heading. Garner didn't take any prisoners and his left- and right hand technique are still uncomparable. Most jazz fans know Erroll Garner from his pivotal album "Concert By The Sea" (Columbia Records, 1955). But there are a lot more recordings available in the market that derserves wider recognition. Among the surprises are "Portrait of Erroll Garner" - 10CD mono box remastered to the highest audio quality by the English Document Records. With almost 180 tunes played in this box in solo and trio format, it's not possible to pick some hightlights - there are too many of them. The box is a travel in time and music genres in the American Songbook, beloved jazz tunes, Garner originals and even C&W tunes are treated with no respect. Brilliant. The 40 pages box booklet is jewel about Erroll Garner's life and music. The price? Bargain offer, so go online to get a copy asap (I bought this box on Schipol Airport Amsterdam for USD10 (!!!) - best bargain I've ever made). Highly recommended!"
