CD Reviews

Mediterranean Gitano Alchemy
Enrique Torres | San Diegotitlan, Califas | 12/06/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Another in a long line of artists who use their musical roots to explore other forms, Fernandez does so tastefully. Eric Fernandez has a winner with this effort as he stretches the limits of flamenco to produce a CD that fits into the category of world music as easily as it does noveau flamenco. Infusing just enough flamenco to keep the guitar as the focal point, deviating ever so slightly to introduce other elements that intrigue but never dominate the hybrid sound. The use of Moroccan rhythms and Sardinian shepherds voices add to the the world music sound. Imagine "Deep Forest" ala flamenco without the electronic wizadry. That Fernandez does not go far from the Mediterranean for musical traditions is refreshing and gives the CD a bit more credibility and authenticity in the merging of cultural influences. Elements of Greek, Jewish, Arabian and other Mediterrean cultures create a noveau style that fit quite effortlessly to create something tradional yet innovative. Fernandez is adept at his art and plays masterfully creating a synthesis of sound that is highly proficient. At the forefront of noveau flamenco Fernandez has created something that shines more than most and stays clear of trying to incorporate anything that isn't close to the gypsy influences of the Mediterranean. Conceptually this CD works, it is bound by Gitano heart and soul."

"It's no Nomad, but the gypsy flavor is strongly apparent in this enjoyable CD. again, he's no Jesse Cook, and no Gypsy King either, but it is flavorful and catchy. i'd give it a three for replayabilty, but a one on favoritisim."

"Wow, was I impressed at Eric's CD the first time I listened to it. My ears could not believe how beatiful piece after piece sounded. Ottmar Liebert was not doubt an innovator with his first CD but after that, gone. Eric is also an innovator with this CD. He mixes guitar with just about everything that comes out of the Mediterraneo superbly mixed with great voices. This CD feels like a greatest hits from different musicians but yet is all Erics'. The impressing part of it is that he takes the back seat in some of the pieces and the pieces were written by him. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. SAD THE HE HAS NOT COME OUT WITH A NEW CD. COME ON ERIC PRODUCE, PRODUCE!!!!"
