CD Reviews

Energetic and bountiful

"It says something that I've never paid more than a couple of dollars for an ENERGY ORCHARD album, as they seem to jump straight into the discount rack or the second-hand section immediately. I don't understand this, because what I've heard from them has been rather good. It makes it easier for cheapskates like me to pick up some sublime music, but I pity all the people missing out on this.Musically, Energy Orchard could be described as an Irish folk/rock/pop combination. But they aren't just taking old traditional songs and putting a faster beat behind them or just playing them with an electric guitar. They're taking those musical stylings and rhythms, throwing away some stuff, retaining the rest, pushing the result through the modern influences of rock, jazz and blues to create something really unique. They've got a great bluesy feel to them; the soulful harmonica that permeates the album just sounds wonderful. The lyrics are real salt of the Earth stuff. Hard working, well meaning, down and outs make up the main subjects -- people chewed up by cities, societies and love. It's great stuff to sing along too. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if their catchy choruses were designed specifically for people in bars to shout to.This is a very strong album, with some very skilled musicians giving it their all. As I mentioned, you can find their albums on-line for very little money, so there's not much risk in ordering something from them. I can virtually guarantee that you won't be disappointed. (Energy Orchard's PAINKILLER album is currently not listed on Amazon's site, but I can't recommend it enough. Perfection.)"
