Synopsis

Tejano stalwart Emilio Navaira is in fine form on Entre Amigos, which showcases his knack for choosing solid, radio-ready hits that showcase a sturdy, confident vocal style. Navaira's been at it now for 15 years, so he knows his way around a galloping cumbia or a shuffling norteno song. He's particularly effective on tracks "Tarde o Temprano," "Parece Que" and "Herido," the album's winsome opener. Not one to rest on his laurels, Navaira ably tackles a winning bilingual version of the country staple "Before the Next Teardrop Falls" and makes it his own. He also enlists R&B hotshot DJ Kane for an update of Kenny Rogers' "The Gambler," transforming it into an effective urban-Tejano hybrid. Beto Zapata of Pesado and Jose Luis Ayala of Los Humildes also make appearances, but this is Navaira's party from start to finish and a solid portrait of a Tejano titan capably comfortable in his own skin. --Joey Guerra

CD Reviews

Brilliant album of ballads by Emilio Navaira

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Entre Amigos is a sensational album by the Emilio Navaira; this talented young man gives us quite a fine collection of songs on this album. The artwork is very thoughtfully laid out; and the sound quality is excellent.

"Herido" (Hurt) has a great rhythm marked by the percussion and Emilio sings this with all his heart and soul. Emilio sings of love and how it can sometimes hurt you a lot! The guitar work is very well done and all in all this is a very solid number to begin the CD. "Hoy Que Te Marchas" features Emilio front and center--and that's all right by me! Emilio sings with panache and he never misses a beat! I love it.

"No Me Hables De Ese Amor (Don't Speak To Me OF This Love)" gets the royal treatment from Emilio and his buddies play their instruments to perfection--and beyond! This is classic Tejano music and it's really very pretty. You don't even need to know a word of Spanish to enjoy ballads like these--Emilio is THAT good.

"Tarde O Temprano" again features that signature Emilio Navaira sound--there's great accordion, guitar work and percussion to accompany Emilio as he sings this flawlessly. I am very impressed; and "Tarde O Temprano" is a ballad that I really like. "Todavía (Still)" gets a much softer touch when the guitars play so much more softly with great sensitivity; and Emilio sings this tender ballad crooning all the way as great as the best of them ever could!

"Y Olvídalo" has a stunning melody as Emilio sings about a love that must be forgotten; and this number always tugs at my heartstrings when I hear it. Emilio Navaira could only sing this so well.

"Before The Next Teardrop Falls" has Emilio singing beautifully in both Spanish and English; and if there ever was any doubt as to his talent this song should squelch that immediately! "Before The Next Teardrop Falls" shines like a masterpiece when Emilio and his buddies perform this classic tune. "Algún Día Volverás" has Emilio singing to his woman that one day she will return to him; he knows his love for her will eventually lead her back to him; and it's beautiful.

"Mi Querido Sabio" ends the CD with a strong number that stuns me with its beauty; and it leaves you wanting more! This duet with Salomón Robles is done brilliantly.

It's my understanding that Emilio Navaira is still clinging to life after injuries he incurred in a traffic accident; and I send this out to him in the sincerest hope that he recovers fully very soon. Emilio Navaira is a great talent and we are better off because he shared his gift with us."
