Synopsis

Classic E.L.O. music has always been stuck in its own retro-futuristic time warp of recombinant pop. Inside that image of E.L.O.'s spaceship (here updated without the 8-track docking bay), one imagines a ye olde discotheque stuffed with Beatles mannequins and powered by pump organ synthesizers. The genius of Jeff Lynne is to fuse kindergarten rock & roll, ultra-Liverpudlian choruses, and faux-symphonic instrumentation with a pop that's both sappy and supple. With only a few duff tracks, this timeless, invigorating disc is a rocking, left-field surprise. Talk about a comeback--Zoom is nothing short of a revelation for fans of this critically underappreciated group. Lynne sings on the opening cut, "Alright," that "You've got to hold onto something that you believe / Hold onto something that makes you feel alright," and the entire album bears this out with grace and wit. --Mike McGonigal

The published critique has it exactly right: while much later than the original ELO albums, this album is much in the style of ELO music as we know and love it and, hence, probably the reason Jeff Lynne chose to release it as an ELO album. No peaks as high as on previous albums but generally very enjoyable and listenable!

Not a bad album by any stretch of the imagination. If you liked "Hold On Tight" and "Rock and Roll is King" then buy this album - but those expecting the Classic ELO sound of electric violins and lush synthesizers will only find two or three tracks of interest.

For the purposes of this review, the equation is: Traveling Wilburys + Beatles = Electric Light Orchestra.

if you are looking for ELO's last gasp, this is not it - look instead to "Balance of Power". The spiritual successor of ELO is ELO part 2, which is basically the rest of the band after Jeff Lynne took ownership of the name. Ironically, after acquiring the ELO name, Jeff Lynne took them to court and made them change their name. Hope it was worth it, Jeff.

More than Alright
Dark Star-The Other One | The Bus To Never Ever Land | 04/15/2010
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This album shows ELO coming back full stride with most of the songs being well above avarage. Jeff is in control playing most of the instruments and pilots the ship into mostly great space. I should point out that George Harrison, Ringo Starr and Richard Tandy are some of the musicians the make guest appearences on here. The disc starts off wit the upbeat rocker Alright and before you know it, your foot is tapping right along. Moment In Paradise is something that would've fit in well on Secret Messages While songs like State Of Mind, Easy Money and Lonesome Lullaby rock. The disc also has pretty ballads like Just For Love on it. If you like the ELO of the '70's and '80's, this will be right up your ally."
