CD Reviews

Well you know what they say.

"Well they say impersonating is the best form of flattery. Well in the case of Ektomorf's "Outcast" I guess this statement can be used. I will start by saying I am a huge Sepultura fan and I do enjoy a lot of Soulfly as well. These Hungarian metalheads must be the biggest Sepultura/Soulfly fans in the world because this album is a direct rip off or tribute (depending on how you want to look at it) to the Brazilian gods of metal. I'm not going to lie this "Outcast" is one heavy mother of an album, but is way too similar to 90's Sepultura and Soulfly material. The singer sings just like Max just not quite as good, the guitar players plays just like Andreas just not as good, so I think you get my point.

If one is a huge Sepultura/Soulfly fan this album is worth checking out. You will either be completely offended on the blatant borrowing of those particular bands style or enjoy the album for what it is a complete tribute album, which is how I see it. I cannot condone using a band's sound so similar but Ektomorf' does it so well in this case. This might be a bit of strong statement to make but if Max would have stayed with Sepultura this album could have been the follow up to "Roots" just done better. I guess it's just hard for me not to kind of like this record. I look at this way Ektomorf is giving me an appetizer before the Sepultura reunion, which I'm hoping, will happen but I'm not holding my breath. On a side note if you are looking for a Sepultura influenced band but have their own unique sound I highly recommend the band Ankla. Stay heavy!
