CD Reviews

Compilation of Gems from Prolific Cult Artist
03/11/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Imagine an artist who releases an average of 2 albums per year but few people have heard of. As well as being incredibly prolific, Ed Kuepper has achieved high standards in musical quality and innovation for well over a decade. Nevertheless, there's an irony in the title of this compilation. Few of the songs were hits - even in his native Australia. Which makes it a delight for the new listener to be the first on the block to hear these quality tunes. The music is hard to pigeon-hole - part Beck, part REM, a dash of Zeppelin. Many of the songs are guitar-driven (but with very few solos), there's usually a unique touch of synths or piano and a few feature a driving horn section. An irresistable collection. One which stimulated me to explore his back catalogue further - I now have 11 of his albums."
A Great Sampler that Will Cost you a Lot of Money

"I love indulging in long reviews but nothing I can say at length will match the objective facts about this release and this artist. According to Amazon.com, I bought this release in February of 2003. It was my introduction to Ed Kuepper. At the end of April of 2003, I have 13 of his albums and am looking for the remaining ones. That's how great Ed Kuepper is.He's a guitar guy and his music is usually guitar music, both acoustic and electric. In the later 1990s, he dabbled more with electronic sounds but never put the guitar down. Although he is actually an immigrant of german extraction, his music seems as quintessentially Australian as anyone's I can think of, blending a bit of blues, a bit of that peculiarly Australian flavor of country and the jangly sort of pop that his old band The Saints took to after he had left. However, he's a much better songwriter than Chris Bailey and his arranging skills far outstrip the latter-day Saints' predictably commercial approach. This excellent collection that pulls from only about 5 or 6 years of his career will make my point. And then you'll be buying everthing else too."
Outrageously Good

"So what does it say that mine is only the fourth review for this cd that came out over a decade ago? And, it's the fourth review that gives this 5 stars.

This is an outstanding cd, and it's outrageous that Ed Kuepper isn't better known. I was fortunate to hear his music (along with some other fine Australian artists, such as Little Birdy) on a Qantas flight.

As with the other reviewers, my Ed Kuepper collection quickly grew to many cds. However, this is the one to start with. You will not be disappointed.

Ed Kuepper has been described in many ways. One of my favorite is the description of him as kind of an Australian Bruce Springsteen."
