CD Reviews

More excellence from Fischer
Riccardo | Alexandria, VA | 07/22/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The Slavonic Dances are part of a crowded field. Szell, Dohnanyi, Kubelik--straight, solid, and satisfying; Harnoncourt--exciting and original; Rodzinski and Neumann--not really competitive; some moments with Masur and Maazel, the list goes on and on.

Then comes Fischer, hot on the heels of superb Bartok discs, Dvorak's Legends and the New World Symphony. Do we actually need yet another recording of the Slavonics? This set may be the best of all, and that's saying something. The orchestra is first-rate, as is the recording, but it's Ivan who is emerging as one of the most talented and consistently excellent conductors on the scene today. If you're looking for one recording of this absolutely delightful repertoire, you can buy an excellent budget version with Szell, but spend the extra money and get one that is warmer, more exciting, and almost as well played, and with fantastic sounds, even SACD. You will love this disc and probably start looking for Fisher's others. Guaranteed."
