Search - Dumazz :: Mother Rhythm

The debut release from African-jazz ensemble Dumazz is a CD-sized party, and the listener is most emphatically invited. An appealing mix of African rhythms, jazz riffs, rock & roll, and even a guitar solo or two reminiscent of Bela Fleck's banjo is what's to be found on Mother Rhythm. Given the album's overwhelming cheerfulness, it by rights should have been released in high summer in time for beach parties, but it's enjoyable at any time of the year. Things kick off with the highly danceable "Makossa" and proceed to range all over the musical map, with plenty of solid bass lines and excellent percussion work. Overall, Mother Rhythm is a party for any time of the year. --Genevieve Williams
