Synopsis

Album Description
2009 collection. The great Duke Ellington only rarely recorded in a trio format. This release compiles all of his trio recordings from 1953 to 1957 (three tunes, in fact, are piano-bass duets on which the bass only accompanies Ellington's piano). As a bonus, we have added an extended 1966 solo piano version of 'New World A-Comin'' and an extremely rare solo piano version of 'Mood Indigo'. Lonehill.

CD Reviews

He doesn't need His Famous Orchestra to astound!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"If you work your way over to Ellington's "Piano Reflections" album, you'll see that I gave it a rave review some years ago. This imported collection includes everything from that album, plus another ten tracks of trio/duo/solo recordings. Not all of this added material is quite as blindingly brilliant as those 1953 sessions... but some of it is, and none of it is "bad". For just a couple of bucks more, it's definitely worth having. (It's certainly hard to argue with a 79-minute CD in terms of value!)

Essentially, this disc is one-stop shopping to demonstrate that Ellington the piano stylist was just as brilliant as Ellington the composer, Ellington the bandleader, and Ellington the icon.
