CD Reviews

The mighty DRAMATICS.... ANOTHER HOT ONE !!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I LOVE THIS CD!! I bought it at a used cd store ,( if you can believe that) listened, to it several times ...and loved EVERY TRACK ....except one.the cover version of "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" ...not because of THE DRAMATICS' delivery of the song ...which is ALWAYS GREAT (THE DRAMATICS ALWAYS HAVE BEEN, AND STILL REMAIN...ONE OF THE BEST SINGING GROUPS IN THE BUSINESS, BAR NONE),...it's just that a SIMON AND GARFUNKEL song by them doesn't work for me.(It's kinda like if JAMES BROWN had tried to tackle a BEACH BOYS tune)...STRANGELY...I found that this was one of the songs that the group chose as the SINGLE RELEASE !!! BAD IDEA ...They should've chosen the album's 2ND track " LIVE YOUR LIFE " THAT SONG IS DYNAMITE !!... CLASSIC DRAMATICS AT THEIR VERY BEST!! EVERYONE I'VE PLAYED THIS SONG FOR AGREES...THIS SONG COOKS !! and , the rest of the album is EQUALLY GOOD!! it appears that this album also marked the END (appearently this time for good ) of ORIGINAL LEAD SINGER WILLIAM "WEE GEE" HOWARD'S tenure with the group... I only heard him on TWO of the tracks , and a new member, STEVEN BOYD,on the cover...so I'm assuming he left the group during the recording sessions. If you like THE DRAMATICS,or just like GREAT VOCAL GROUP singing in GENERAL, you'll like this album...It kinda came and went in the year of it's initial release, and deserved a MUCH HIGHER CHART PLACING. GET IT !!! 5 STARS !!! PS ...IN THE LAST TWO YEARS , THE DRAMATICS' RANKS HAVE BEEN DECIMATATED BY THE DEATHS OF SEVERAL ORIGINAL AND LONG STANDING MEMBERS ... R.I.P TO "WEE GEE", ELBERT WILKINS,RON BANKS, AND LENNY MAYES...YOU WERE THE BEST !!"
Their unheralded 1989 comeback album.

"After a long hiatus, The Dramatics made a fine (if unheralded) comeback in 1989 with this CD. Smooth and sensual ballads remain their forte but the New Jack Swing-infused dance tracks sound very dated. Despite its minor flaws this is one of the group's best modern-day efforts and one worthy of more attention."
