"Sloppy Seconds is a diamond. The crusty album title and goofy cover photo obscure the searing vocals, rhapsodic harmonies and clever guitar riffs and licks. Twelve Shel Silverstein-authored songs are wonderfully interpreted and performed by Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show. The songs range from vulgar but funny to heartbreaking ballads. "Freakin' at the Freakers' Ball" is one of the most shocking and disgusting songs I've ever heard. It's also one of the funniest, and so are "Get My Rocks Off" and "Looking for Pussy." There are lovely ballads such as "If I'd Only Come and Gone" and "Turn on the World." "Last Mornin'" is an inspiration for the dispirited. "Cover of the Rolling Stone" was intended to goad the editors of the magazine to put the Show on the cover. They didn't, the snobs.

Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show was a one-of-a-kind band. Superficially, this album is a throwaway, bits and pieces stuffed into a blender. Despite their irreverence. their performance is superb. They were skilled musicians, great vocalists, and the songs presented here slap, tickle, and can make grown men weep. Altogether, Sloppy Seconds is downright outrageous.

Not suitable for young listeners.
