A lost masterpiece

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This obscure classic from the early 1990s contains at last three timeless songs: Bangkok Attorney, Beaten Up In Love Again and The President's Share Of The Promised Land. The sound of The Doves included guitars, keyboards, percussion, piano, synths and drums. Ken Foreman is responsible for lead vocals except on Beaten Up In Love Again where Angie Brown gives an unforgettable performance. This is a very attractive rock sound with a strong pop sensibility. The songs have great melodies, catchy hooks and sometimes quite poetic lyrics.

The mournful Bangkok Attorney is a slow lilting number with unusual imagery and a brilliant arrangement. This song with its evocative lyrics and beautiful melody is truly timeless. Beaten Up In Love Again is another tour de force, a moving and soulful rock ballad sung by Angie Brown, that stays in the mind. Here again, the instrumental and vocal arrangement is most impressive. The title track is a rhythmic midtempo rock number with innovative instrumentation, whilst Mostly We Don't Talk is a nicely flowing rock ballad that also scores high in both the lyrics and melody department.

The next highlight is called The President's Share Of The Promised Land, an addictive rock ballad with beautiful imagery, gripping vocals and an innovative rhythmic texture. Cry On My Shoulder and I Wouldn't Know You From The Rest are above average. This remarkable album concludes with Eyes Like Mary, a soulful duet by Foreman and Brown with a beautiful melody. Affinity is an absolutely outstanding album of incredibly beautiful songs and stunning musicianship. Trends and styles may come and go, but good songs last forever.
