"This review refers to "Native Land" Don Grusin,CD

Okay, okay, I will admit, when I first picked up this "Native Land" CD while browsing at my local music store, I thought I had found a Dave Grusin album I hadn't heard yet. Upon closer look,I see this album is DON Grusin.I decided to give it a try. Anything with the name Gruisin has got to be good, I thought.I'm happy to say, I was not disappointed at all. And although fans of Dave will recognize his distinct style on piano((track 7 "Road Town"), and a bit of his influence throughout, I still would call this CD a good find.

It's a delicious African flavor, with a jazzy twist. The 10 tracks are wonderfully spirited, the emotions, whether happy, or dreamy, etc are contagious. The vocals are lovely and lulling. Some of the instruments of the genre are a refreshing change of pace, and add an authentic quality to the theme. Among the violins, cello, sax, guitar, and of course piano and synths(Don Grusin), you'll be delighted listening to; tuben, talking drums, shakers, conga, taegum and penny whistle. The musicians make the instruments sing and tell the story.

The music will take you to far off lands. The songs are aptly titled and convey the feelings perfectly. "Ritual","Smilin'", "Catch the Spirit", "Madala", "Native Land", "Road Town", "Dreamland", "Onde"(own-gee), and "Totem". Featured Musicians are Alex Acuna, Dave Grusin, Abragam Laboriel, Judd Miller, Armand Sabal-Lecco and Ricardo Silveira. Every section has it's own personality.Tracks range from about 4 to 5 1/2 minutes, a respectable 50 minute CD.Nice sound and quality as well.Included is a booklet, listing the tracks, the musicians and the instruments.

So if you are a fan of jazz, African or the music of Dave Grusin, give Don a try, I think you'll like it!

enjoy....Laurie
