These two first-rate concertos reveal very different sides of this neglected master. Brahms praised Dohnányi's early chamber works, and the influence is very obvious in the First Piano Concerto. It's a big, Romantic piece of substantial length with lots of good tunes and heaps of work for the soloist. The Second Concerto, by contrast, is much shorter, but even more tightly constructed. It begins with a very memorable horn theme that sounds strikingly Hungarian, and may well turn out to be the more popular of the two, but we'll never know unless people start listening to them!
