CD Reviews

DINAH DELIGHTS ON CAPITOL'S BEST!
A. POLLOCK | PLYMOUTH, DEVON United Kingdom | 07/13/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Dinah Shore's long recording career included a period with Capitol Records when she produced six acclaimed albums, with all having been previously issued in the UK by EMI as "2 on 1" CDs. It can therefore be argued this superb compilation of songs chosen from the same source is superfluous. However, in my opinion these selections will appeal to buyers who prefer variety rather than concept with such a bargain-priced double-CD of forty-eight superb tracks encouraging purchase by casual and also younger buyers eager to enjoy Dinah's vocal magic.

Of the songs, SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY and TAKING A CHANCE ON LOVE are amongst six from YES INDEED! on which Nelson Riddle did the conducting honours in 1959; IT HAD TO BE YOU heads eleven wonderful standards from DINAH SINGS, PREVIN PLAYS(1960); WHEN I GROW TOO OLD TO DREAM and six others emanate from SOMEBODY LOVES ME(1960). I'LL WALK ALONE and seven others are re-recordings of her 40's hits which graced THE FABULOUS HITS OF DINAH SHORE(1962) leaving BYE BYE BLUES and eight other upbeat or bluesy numbers to impress when accompanied by the legendary vibraphonist Red Norvo on DINAH SINGS SOME BLUES WITH RED(1960). Finally, there's a return to Dinah's roots as she goes Dixieland for WAY DOWN YONDER IN NEW ORLEANS and six others from the 1962 album DINAH, DOWN HOME!(1962). Throughout, Dinah's superb vocal style is beyond reproach with songs which are trusted and true standards.

Attractive art-work includes some glamorous head-shots of Dinah; the notes are effusive and help to make this a recommended top-notch release from the improved and irresistible catalogue of UK's EMI Gold label.
