Synopsis

Album Description
Limited 200gm vinyl LP pressing of this 1981 Folk album. One of the best-loved and most influential albums to emerge from the British Folk scene, Handful Of Earth was originally released at the height of Thatcherism and in the midst of political and economic turmoil. It articulated a rarely-concealed ideological fury that has rarely been matched for its passion - yet by turns it also provided a tender meditation on the natural world. This remarkable double act went on to be named Folk Album of the Decade by fRoots magazine.

CD Reviews

Commanding voice & incredible guitar playing
alba1148 | Spain | 06/17/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I decided to buy this cd just for listening to "World Turned Upside Down" (full of passion song with incredible lyrics) but after listening to all the songs I can say I have become a great fan of Gaughan! I highly recommend this cd: I am sure anybody who likes folk music (specially british folk) will love it. Buy it and enjoy it!"
Dick Gaughan's Best Solo Album
Berkeley Boy | Albany, CA United States | 02/10/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is Dick Gaughan's finest solo album, full of wonderful songs, performed beautifully. I have seen him several times, and have most of his albums, including Kist o'Gold and the first two Five Hand Reel albums (all of which I strongly recommend, if you can find them, as they are out of print). However, this is the album I come back to of his, and the one I buy for and recommend to others."
Great Musicianship

(4 out of 5 stars)

"A sparse and endearing album, full of both understated love songs and fiery anthems, this is a must buy for anyone who loves true Celtic music (no new age dream songs, thank goodness). If you buy it for nothing else, buy it for the song "Now Westlin Winds" which features Gaughan's fantastic guitar playing and deep, crackly voice. The tune itself is gentle and winning with soft swells of feeling. The Burns lyrics are a seducing view of the autumn."
