CD Reviews

Not over the original
04/29/2000
(2 out of 5 stars)

"Diana Ross' reliance on Brian Rawling and Paul Barry (METRO) to assure a comeback backfires; Unlike original compositions by the team ("Be With You" and "When the Heartache is over") that were borne out of the duo's creative edge in their craft of dance/Euro-pop, "NOYY" Remix is an insult to the progressive and insinuatingly urban vibe of the nugget from EDIAND. This underestimates the integrity of Mr. Malike Pendelton, a fledgling newcomer on the scene, who was attempting to jack Diana with some street credibility; the Metro mix extracts the essense of the song (the yearning and the sultry vibe). Any of the inflection is lost: Diana's lower registers and breathy delivery that added dimension to the original seem washed away by the would-be BPM frenzy, whereas the original suits the vibe of the song to the tee, and puts the emphasis on D's pauses and delivery which culminates in a more credible vocal and production of sheer value that underscores the theme of the song. An older less peppy Diana sounds more washed out than in the original. This is simply not for club purists or fans of the Metro duo responsible for more substantive pop such as Enrique's "Be With You", or for fans of Ms. Ross who enjoy her more classic dance anthems that are classics to this day."
