CD Reviews

Love to Love Dennis Brown
Anne Harrison | Takoma Park, MD USA | 08/16/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"The late, great Crown Prince of Reggae, Dennis Brown is one of the world's most prolific recording artists. This CD was of particular interest to me because RAS Records is located in my neighborhood and I like how they have plugged away for years, in a music genre that has not had a steady following in the U.S., for the pure love of it. The president of the company has been a fan of reggae for over 20 years. This CD provides the listner with a number of Dennis Brown's classic hits like "Revolution," "Should I?" "Sitting and Watching," "Hold on to What You've Got." These songs are from the prime of Dennis' career in the 70's. The CD also contains some favorites from the 80's like "Milk and Honey," and "Love Has Found It's Way." (The latter of which was one of Dennis' favorites). While the CD has a nice mix of Dennis' best, I thought it would be a better balanced CD if it contained more of the political/spiritual roots type reggae like "Revolution," "Sitting and Watching," and "Milk and Honey." This CD abounds in the softer, "lovers rock" style of reggae as heard in "Love Has Found It's Way," "Hold on to What You Got," "Should I," etc. Don't get me wrong, this is good stuff too but I would prefer a little more of the struggler-type reggae. All in all, it's a good buy that fans of Dennis can appreciate as well as those who are new to his music."
