Synopsis

Australian Dave Hole plays like a caffeinated Elmore James, zinging a steel slide over his fretboard with so much hard-edged energy that he's drawn the praise of not only blues listeners, but also fans like Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett. This 1997 release is his first album recorded in Chicago, with the support of Windy City blues MVPs: keyboardist Tony Zamagni, bassist Johnny B. Gayden, drummer Ray Allison, and others. That's what Hole needed to anchor his performances, which in the past have seemed more facile and speed-crazed than heartfelt. Even his wildest slide exhortations sound rooted over this band's powerhouse grooves. Hole's more yeller than singer, but that's what his exuberant lyrics--he wrote all 14 songs--demand. This is breathless blues for the approaching millennium. --Ted Drozdowski

CD Reviews

Dave Hole is an absolute phenom on slide guitar!
S. G. Picklesimer | So. Calif U.S.A | 04/12/1999

"How could I have missed this slide guitar genius? I've played Blues for over 30 years, heard his name a few times, but never listened to anything by him. After hearing "Ticket to Chicago", I'm buying ALL his CD's... His raw energy and how he makes that guitar cry and sing, elevates slide guitar to a whole new level. As a fellow guitarist, I am in awe of this mans mastery of slide guitar blues!!!!"

"Out of Dave's 7 CD's, this is the 2nd best, behind "THE LIVE ONE" (See prior Shaq review!) it's a distant 2nd, but also way, way, ahead of 3-7. A number of these songs are also on the "Live" album in a longer format. As of this writing 1/20/07 I'm told Dave has a new release coming in February 2007, he's disappeared for years. I hope it's like these 2 and not the other 5. This is worth purchasing for any slide guitar fan. I have my finger's crossed awaiting his next release."
