CD Reviews

Very well done, if you get the jokes
F. Behrens | Keene, NH USA | 12/08/1999
(3 out of 5 stars)

"So just when you thought you were safe from Sister Amnesia and the rest, out came "Nuncrackers" on the DRG label with its seasonal spoofs. Okay, I thought: any more would get us nun-plussed. So more came and we are! Witness now (12623) with Vicki Lawrence. The premise is now that Sister Amnesia, having gotten back her memory in "Nunsense I" and a recording contract in "Nunsense II" is now able to do her stuff at the Grand Ole Opry House. To get the joke, one must know about the musical genre being parodied here. For example, in "Bye Birdie," the spoofs are hard to tell from the music they are mocking. I feel that same problem exists here. "Mini Pearls of Wisdom" has a cleverly punning title and really funny lyrics as it stands; but whether one gets the jokes in songs like "Dial 411" and "Seven A.M. in Phoenix" depends on how well one knows the country-western lyrics. Written and directed by Dan Goggin, "Jamboree" is loud, spirited, full of fun, and boasting a good supporting cast: Deborah Del Mastro, Nancy Johnston, Jennifer Smith, and Scott Wakefield. Now perhaps a little rest for the Sisters for maybe a decade or two?"
