CD Reviews

One of Mayall's best
S. Moore | Redwood City, CA United States | 12/15/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Not only is this a superb recording, but it has many bonus cuts. These cuts are NOT contained on the Hard Road re-release, as stated below. (I'm holding it in my hand & the tracks are completely different). While many of the bonus tracks do feature Peter Green, at least two feature Mick Taylor on guitar. The lineup was changing almost daily in 1967...read all about it in the CD booklet for Crusade. A must for any Mayall fan!"
Essential Early Mayall
Kurt Harding | Boerne TX | 03/20/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Its about time that this important early John Mayall recording has finally been remastered and re-released. Legions of Mayall fans who own the original on well-worn vinyl should be thrilled as should younger Mayall fans who will hear some of the most important people in the history of blues rock playing as a unit. The original Crusade features such luminaries as Mick Taylor, John McVie, and Keef Hartley while the bonus tracks portion features such soon-to-be-famous personages as Mick Fleetwood, Peter Green and Aynsley Dunbar.

My favorite cuts on the original are: the powerful Oh Pretty Woman; Stand Back Baby; My Time After A While which features a great sax interlude; the instrumental Driving Sideways; an emotional The Death of J B Lenoir; and the bitter Me and My Woman. Among the ten bonus cuts, my favorites are: the instrumantal Greeny; Missing You; Please Don't Tell, a bouncy Mayall-penned number; Your Funeral, My Trial, Double Trouble, and It Hurts Me Too. The two takes on Suspicions are a fine treat as well.

Whether you are a casual John Mayall fan or a completeist, you'll hear that Crusade is an essential part of his career work and merits a place in your music library. At this price, how can you hesitate?

Killer blues from a great band
Dennis Lynch | Twain Harte, Ca. | 04/15/2010

"In my opinion, this cd should be in the top 5 of all blues cd's. John Mayall is the father of the English blues and he really proves that he deserves the title, by his playing and the band he has chosen to back him up on this cd, The whole band is awesome, John's playing and singing is as good as it gets. Mick Taylor on lead guitar, plays guitar solos thru out the cd that are as good as any one I have seen live including Eric Clapton. This cd is the real stuff, with John and the band playing some great blues. Mick Taylor, the lead guitar player. went on to join The Rolling Stones on a number of cd's, that is how good he is.If you really love the blues, this is the cd for you."
