Synopsis

Album Description
Country Gazette had its beginning in the country/rock scene in southern California in late 1971. The first version of the band recorded two albums for United Artists. From 1976 to 1988 the band recorded five albums for Flying Fish, with banjoist Alan Munde and guitarist Roland White the mainstays of the band. This selection of 21 tracks, compiled by Munde, brings together some of their best, most characteristic work. Guests include Sam Bush, fiddle; David Grier, guitar and many others.

This Is Not Your Grandpa's Bluegrass Music
Steve Vrana | Aurora, NE | 12/27/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Although Country Gazette had its origins in the early 70s, this Flying Fish disc is limited to 1976-1987 with the core group featuring mandolin player Roland White (of the Kentucky Colonels), banjoist Alan Munde and guitarist (on most tracks) Joe Carr.Although they include nods to their influences like Bill Monroe ("Molly and Tenbrooks"), for example, the band is more progressive than traditional. How else can you explain a love song to your tractor ("Sweet Allis Chalmers") or extracting revenge on the football jock ("The Great Joe Bob")?Superior musicianship, excellent song selection, a great addition to any bluegrass collection!"
