"A nice compilation of tunes Count Basie recorded for Roulette from 1958-62, when the band was at its popular peak. Neil Hefti is heavily-represented (Kid from Red Bank, Flight of the Foo Birds, and others), and Quincy Jones weighs in with the soulful For Lena and Lenny. Some great solo work from Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, among others, and some very interesting plunger and mute work from the trumpet section on Jive at Five. And of course, lots of that "Basie Bounce," set off by the strumming of "Steady" Freddie Green on the guitar. If you like the Count Basie Orchestra and late-50's jazz in general (as I do), this is a must-have CD."
