CD Reviews

Lesser album of Miami sound, lots of beats, not much else
Daniel J. Hamlow | Narita, Japan | 12/04/2003
(3 out of 5 stars)

"Miami Sound Machine, Expose and the Cover Girls were at the forefront of the Miami pop sound in the 80's. Less known because they mainly had two big splashes on the dance charts were Company B, and like the Andrews Sisters who sang about the boogie-woogie bugle boy of well, you know, there were three girls in CB. This debut album features the original lineup of Lori L., Susan Johnson, and Lezlee Livrano, who were bedecked in blue dresses and platinum blonde shock wigs similar to Tina Turner. The sound here have a consistent sound, nothing varying too much in terms of moderate dance floor BPM, nothing that would top Stock-Aitken-Waterman, but it's good enough to stay awake. Here are some highlights."Fascinated" was the only Top 40 single for these girls and the "Axel F" like keyboards, which were also like those used in Expose's "Point Of No Return", caught my attention. I kept thinking that yeah, they sounded close to Expose, even down to the lead vocalist. Despite its low showing on the singles chart, it peaked the hot dance charts."Perfect Lover" peaked at #12 on the hot dance charts with synths and a rhythm bordering on the Cover Girls' "Because Of You.""Full Circle" was the other #1 that topped the dance and maxi-single charts, and I can see why. This song incorporates the usual synths but catchy hooks in the chorus instead of the usual outright numbing jam of drum machines. At 5:43, it's the longest song here. It was also this song performed on Dance MTV that I saw them live for the first time and was finally able to match voices with faces. I either laughed or rolled my eyes at the wigs, I remember. One of the standout cuts."Jam On Me" incorporates a more Latin sound but nothing much else. As for the other four songs I didn't go into, they have drum machines, synths, vocals, but not much else. And the average length of the songs is five and a half minutes, indicating their dance floor function. Not as good as Expose, but better than Sweet Sensation, as the sounds are richer than that of SS."
More great 80's Freestyle Dance Music

"'Fascinated' was one of the best dance songs of the 80's!! This cd is full of those 80's keyboards sounds that keep you grooving! 'Signed In Your Book Of Love' should've been a massive club hit, 'Full Circle'(another hit), 'Spin Me Around', 'Jam On Me' just rock! If you love and remember this style of dance music you'll love this cd, also I recommend finding the 12'mixes of the singles because they are great!"
