CD Reviews

Ellingtonia Meets Tuba
Mark Maj | Lackawanna, NY United States | 03/01/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Clark Terry is my favorite trumpet player and also a big influence in my own playing style. I believe he can play just about any style he wants and he is impressively witty when it comes to improvising. Unfortunately this release recorded at Reeve Sound Studios sometimes over shadows the great performances with tinges of muddy bass tones from the tuba player (Don Butterfield) and a large hall echo presence that can sometimes distract you from enjoying the wonderful playing. With all that said I still believe that getting this CD is a wise decision. Terry, an Ellington alumni, is unbelievably versatile on Trumpet and Flugelhorn and swings out with impressive ability on the title track and also is able to tug your heart strings with lush emotional riffs on "Blues for Etta" and "A Sunday Kind of Love"."
