This Girl Is A True Fighter!
Busy Body | London, England | 12/23/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The start of 2003 was a brilliant start for Christina Aguilera. She released the ballad "Beautiful" which stormed to No.1 all over the world, including the UK. Sales of her album "Stripped" rose dramatically and people who dismissed and pigeonholed this bright young star were now transformed fans who were enjoying her music. Even the critics who had a hard time focusing on anything but her fashion sense now had to hand it to her: Christina knew how to write great lyrics and sing them with her out-of-this-world voice. The task then was to follow it up with another fantastic single. It came in the form of "Fighter," which was released in June 2003.

Fighter as an all-round song was not as good as Beautiful, because Beautiful had a stronger message of love and world stereotypes. Everyone could relate to Beautiful, which is why it was the biggest world hit of her career. Nevertheless, Fighter was a very popular follow-up on a world scale. It only just entered the US Top 20, but peaked at No.3 in the UK sales chart and was a huge success in many other European countries.

Fighter starts off with a dramatic piano intro which starts off completely different to how the rest of the song will pan out. She then says, "After all you put me through, you think I despise you, but in the end, I wanna thank you cause you made me that much stronger." Then song then begins as the heavy guitar slams in and Christina sings, "Well I thought I knew you, thinkin' that you were true. Guess I, I couldn't trust, called your bluff, time is up, cause I've had enough. You were there by my side, always down for the ride but your joy ride just came down in flames cause your greed sold me out in shame." She then sings one of my personal favourite parts of the song, "After all of the stealing and cheating you probably think that I hold resentment for you, but uh uh, oh no, you're wrong. Cause if it wasn't for all that you tried to do, I wouldn't know just how capable I am to pull through. So I wanna say thank you. Cause..."

Christina then goes on to sing the explosive chorus, "Makes me that much stronger, makes me work a little bit harder, it makes me that much wiser, so thanks for making me a fighter. Made me learn a little bit faster, made my skin a little bit thicker, makes me that much smarter, so thanks for making me a fighter." She then sings the second verse after a short while which consists of the lyrics, "Never say it coming, all of your backstabbing. Just so you could cash in on a good thing before I'd realize your game. I heard you're goin' round playin' the victim now, but don't even begin feeling I'm the one to blame cause you dug your own grave." She then sings the bridge again, before the second chorus which packs even more punch than the first.

The best part of the song arrives next when Christina's vocals raise and she sings, "How could this man I thought I knew turn out to be unjust so cruel? Could only see the good in you pretended not to see the truth. You tried to hide your lies, disguise yourself through living in denial, but in the end you'll see, YOU-WON'T-STOP-ME!" Christina then sings "I am a fighter and I, I ain't goin' stop, there is no turning back. I've had enough!" She then sings the chorus a few more times and the song ends quickly as Christina's voice echoes as she sings, "Fighter!"

The video to Fighter is one of my favourites of 2003. It features Christina as a caterpillar, with three other evil caterpillars who attack her. She then climbs onto a wall and turns into a beautiful butterfly before finishing the song. This was the first video where we saw Christina's jet-black hair - a style which she has still maintained as I type. I personally think her hair looks bad being all dark. If she carry's on, she'll end up like Cher! Overall, Fighter is a wonderful pop song which definitely stands out in 2003 as one of my favourite songs."
