Synopsis

On their third disc, The Coastaline Fire, the Dunnville, Ontario, quartet Chore transcend the emo-core formula with terrific songs. Waves of guitar, soaring vocals, angst-filled lyrics, and crashing tempos inform, but don't limit, tracks like "The Hitchhiker" and "Electrojet." Expert at building and releasing tension, Chore easily slip from wide-open verses into densely packed choruses on tunes like "Dog in the Manger," while they prove on "Burr" and "American Machinist" that they can rock as hard as the next Jesus Lizard. General dissatisfaction hangs over the lyrics while the band plants hooks you don't even know are there until you find yourself singing along to "I'm past the point of no return" (from "By God"). "Virginia Creeper" closes the album with a suitably grandiose strings and electric guitar finale that leaves the listener drained but satisfied. --Shawn Conner

"This is definately the most slept on album of all time. Chore is a Canadian band on an indy label. They don't have a lot of money to make fancy videos, hell the government helped produce their 3RD album... But goddamn, this is one of the best rock cds EVER. From the first track, a picture is etched into your brain. A picture of alienation, solitude, lost dreams and hopelessness. The cd picks up from there and does not quit. I was listening to it as I was going to bed last night and I can honestly say it was creeping me out. The guitar riffs and melodies are haunting to say the least. Do yourself a favour and buy this cd. Personal Favourite: The Hitchhiker"
Falling into the realm of "classic"

"this album is a runaway favorite of mine. it got off to a slow start, but like a train, it kept building and building energy until it surmounted the long-time favourite: hum-youd prefer an astronaut.
chore's latest work is brilliant. the songs are heavy but totally different from what that word previously implied. "the wall burns" is drifting, catchy, and beautiful; the kind of song that makes you giddy from listening. "the hitchhiker" is the summation of what i think heavy music should be, bursting in from the get-go with no warning. the heaviness entails no dolorous or otherwise melancholy implications, and the acoustic guitar additions defy expectations. "B Coma" is the catchiest track, leaving you singing along for days; the chorus is infectious. and the final track, "virginia creeper", is mesmerizing...hypnotic with a meek intro that evolves into stagering layers of melody. strings are used to a non-depressing end, and the linger of this beauty leaves you thirsting for more.
the emotive lyrics arent to be ignored, either. though they seem cryptic, emotion is conveyed through means not explored by most modern bands. no whiny babbling, no superfluous crying, just belting of heartfelt prose in personal verse. the layers of instruments all deserve their own seperate listen, i suggest headphones for best discernment. equal attention should be given to hear the perfection of each instruments' part.
so, try this album out. its great. if you are a fan of hum, failure, helmut, shiner, or anything even similar...this surpasses it all."

"This album contains one of the most perfect songs in human existence... "The Hitchhiker". This entire album is incredible, insightful and original. This deserves 5 stars (mr. thrashmetal doesn't get it, so he chose to be negative... lame) It is a shame that it was so overlooked and eventually led to the end of Chore. The Coastline Fire, as well as Chore's other releases, is full of intensity, and should be deemed a classic. Long live one of Canada's greatest bands!!

Forget the naysayers who don't have a clue what this band was about... get this album and enjoy Chore's last, and finest offering.
