CD Reviews

R&b soul is alive and well. classic

"i truly feel bad for the audience that strictly relies on the radio and corny redundant video shows to put them on to good music. the only problem with that is that you would miss out on somebody like choklate. this girl sounds great and has an album with great production as well. i can't imagine anyone not liking this work. my favorite is "wish i hadn't told you" becuase the music moves you and she is actually saying something. the fact that she writes her songs impresses me also. there is always time for radio garbage but just consider that with less laziness and more effort you can find much better representation of the r&b that's on airwaves. trust me. i was completely dependant on the radio too but thank God i woke up.

i love choklate and this albums quality. she does not dissappoint. get it."

"Between Choklate and The Rebirth, Kajmere is a label that is building a good reputation for itself in my mind. The Kajmere sound is a soul that descends from groups like The Brand New Heavies. It's wonderfully instrumental with singers who draw you right into the groove of things.

Choklate's self-titled debut is a worthy introduction to the only real soul artist I can think of coming out of Seattle. As a vocalist, Choklate has the requisite chops of her trade, but her great talent is in matching herself to the task set down for her by her production. Need sing-song storytelling? "Long Way." Ethereal, haunting melody? "Wish I Hadn't Told You." Jazzy? "Bigger Than You." Bluesy? "What's About to Go Down." Choklate can sing anything you ask her to sing and sing it well.

The production on this album is as diverse as the range that Choklate shows. Producer Vitamin D incorporated live horns and other instrumentation. The result is a very cohesive sound that is more familiar from live sets than from recordings. Choklate plays off the production beautifully and that is no doubt a result of the live instrumentation. A truly collaborative sound. As introductions go, Choklate has managed a noteworthy one."
