CD Reviews

Chino XL - The King Of Lines
Daniel Brown | Atlanta, GA | 08/23/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Emcee... Artist... Novelist... Wordsmith... these are the terms that come to mind when I wanna describe Chino XL, the illest rapper of our time or any other... like most other fans, I'm a huge fanatic who's been truly captivated by Chino's craft, he has the grossest, most controversial lyrics I've ever heard... his abilities with wordplay, punchlines 'n metaphors/simile's is un-matched, and this album is the true showcase of his talent, combining ill, thought-prevoking lyricism with some of the nicest beats as well... Chino's lyrics are so deep 'n rich in their meanings that literally every bar has some sort of story behind it... and when you hear him spit each line with his raw, Jersey accented flow, you sit in amazement at how nasty his delivery is.... Chino could make any rapper in the game look foolish 'n proves why he's on top of his game, but he's still underground due to all the controversy of his lines... these are my 2 fave bars from this album, because the wordplay is absolutely unreal:

"You liars, I'm tired of your fake drug dealin' tales

The only time yall "See Grams"(SeaGrams) is when yall drink them ginger ales"

--- from "Nunca", WHOA this line is insane if you know the drug 'n alcohol references....

"I died a thousand deaths to posess skills such as this

With delivery like where Arabs live: "In Tents"(Intense)"

--- from "I Told You So", what more can I say.... the undisputed King of Wordplay

This album is a must have for Chino XL fans, and definitely worth checkin' out if you're into real, raw, hardcore lyricism... and don't forget to look for his new album "Poison Pen", you can download the first single "Wordsmith" from various sources..."
"Chino make the world go round"

"Chino's back finally after what seemed to take forever for a sophomore release... in 'I Told You So' Chino continues to bash people with his stomach twisting metaphors and he has better beats to rhyme over. But sometimes it seems like Chino's a bit tentative to diss people, especially rappers in particular, and he almost makes himself look like a sex symbol in this CD, but that doesn't hurt the CD in the slightest. Every Chino fan and there momma said that this CD isn't like his previous one and they are right, but Chino is still dope as hell and he serves us with new style. Metro Records, You EFFED UP the tracklisting in this, here is the REAL listing: 1-Rude Awakening 2-What You Got 3-History 4-Nunca 5-A$$hole Intro? 6-A$$hole 7-That Would Be Me 8-Last Laugh 9-Let 'Em Live 10-Baby Momma 11-Sorry 12-Chino XL 13-Chinophone part 1 14-You Don't Want It 15-Chinophone part 2 16-I Told You So 17-Don't Say A Word 18-Chino Fans 19-It's My World 20-A$$ In An Instant 21-Chianardo DiCaprio 22-Skit 23-Bonus Track?? 24-Be Here....I Was VERY disappointed that "Water" wasn't on this CD, neither is "Beef"...but there's still a lot of good material on this CD to enjoy...personal favorite tracks: "Sorry", "Chino XL", "I Told You So", "Nunca", "It's My World"... and everything else, but these i think had the best lyrics...I'm Out... Mind Power!!!"
Chino did it again!

"When you hear the name chino xl, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? ...ummm...the illest punchlines ever spitten, agressive and heartfelt delivery, i dont give an damn attitude. Well, all of that and more is displayed on this album. For someone that has been listening to chino ever since he first came out in 95, this is just what the doctor ordered, especially considering that fact that he finally got the dope production that he needed. Now, the album may not be as dark or as conceptual as his first CD "here to save you all" which was an absolute classic, this one doesnt fall short one bit. Tracks like Nunca (arguabely the best song on the album), Dont want it, that would be me & what you got, really show how chino is no.1 when it comes to articulating a verse and displaying how "its not always what you say, but how you say it". As an emcee myself, chino xl is the by far my biggest influence and this CD showcases why he is so critically acclaimed on the underground scene. And for all you people who thought that chino can only spit punchlines one after the other, and nothing else, listen to the song "water"(which is cut from the original released album) and "be here", and "how it goes". Here are a few of the punchlines on this album:*I'll turn on channel 2 if i wanna C-B-S
*Im wack and i'll just blame it all on god, like Mase (LMAO!)
*The only thing yall outline in chalk is a game of hop scotch
*my style is aids, half of yall got it just none of yall is sayin sh*t
*I'll make think you're on the beach, the way i make you see-shells
*birds fly upside down over your head, cuz you aint worth sh*tting on
*I experience road rage, walking at slow pace
*It'll take the whole cast of E.R to have your ass walking againThis is a gem of an album. BUY IT!! Support good hip hop people!"
