"Ives' songs comprise some of the most beautiful music ever written. I've never heard any other recordings but it's hard to imagine any could be better than this collaboration between Roberta Alexander and Tan Crone. Alexander matches a powerful voice with great emotional range - from the romantic "Songs My Mother Taught Me" to the spright "Memories" and from the forceful "Slugging A Vampire" to the lonely "Spring Song" - and has the diction to make these very American songs sound completely natural. The piano score is more than just accompaniment - it's beautiful in it's own right and Tan Crone adds depth to all the songs. Despite some seemingly atonal harmonies these songs are by no means "emotionally distant"; in fact, Ives really tried to match words and music to enhance each other. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, but they all strike a chord. There is a second set of songs on the same label (called "Ives: Songs, Volume 2") which I can also highly recommend."
