CD Reviews

A delight to listen to from start to finish! No bad tracks!

"Carri Coltrane is getting rave reviews in New England Jazz publications, but the mainstream hasn't yet caught on. They will soon. It's not just her vocals, which are accurate and soothing with just a tinge of "edge". Its the whole production--a wonderful array of jazz-tinged "pop" sandwiched between two exquisite arrangements of Miles Davis tunes. Standouts are two of her own songs (Love Me Where I Live; Safe With Me), and what I think is now the definitive version of Eugene McDaniels much recorded classic, "Feel Like Makin' Love". On the latter, Ron Carter's bass line accentuates the contours of the melody the way a great sculptor convinces you that this rock always looked that way! The other selections are either written by Carri Coltrane herself (under the name Carri Thompson), or by the record's producer, Eugene McDaniels, sometimes in conjunction with some of the musicians. As well as Ron Carter, the guitar of Mark Lucas stands out. On the couple cuts with strings, they are tastefully arranged by Charlie Ernst. Listening to The First Time leads one to believe that these musicians love playing together, and share a respect for Carrie Coltrane and Eugene McDaniels.Carri Coltrane has a later, more jazz oriented release, (Flamenco Sketches) I also recommend, featuring mostly vocalizations of standard jazz compositions by the likes of Miles Davis, John Lewis, and Wayne Shorter, plus some wonderful guest vocals by Gene McDaniels."
Coltrane's music is sensuous but classy.
