Synopsis

Album Description
Under the Influence draws on the inspirations and all time loves of the world?s greatest recording artists. This newest release is compiled Carl Barat of the Libertines, who have released two artist albums to date that have reached platinum status in the UK and are darlings in the US media. Carl Barat needs no introduction; he was the guitarist, vocalist and co-songwriter in the The Libertines, one of the most influential British Bands in recent years. Carl is currently writing his solo album, which has been signed to Vertigo. The tracklist selection includes the Clash, The Smiths, Specials, David Bowie and Bob Dylan. Under the Influence is an indispensable album for Carl Barat fans and anyone with a broad musical heritage.

CD Reviews

An interesting mix-CD...

(3 out of 5 stars)

"...assembled by one of the greatest British musicians that I know of, Carl Barat; formerly of The Libertines, which was a brilliant band in the midst of the fairly bleak rock n' roll scene of the 2000s. He's now become greatly successful in Dirty Pretty Things and will hopefully release more cool music for years to come! When a unique and talented artist like Barat comes out of the blue, it really makes you wonder where their inspiration comes from... Interestingly, before Carl Barat met Pete Doherty, he didn't even know who The Smiths were! They introduced each other to different music and, consequently, influenced each other's musical style. Some of these selections on this compilation aren't suprising to anyone who's followed his career; The Mamas and the Papas' "Dream a Little Dream" has been one of his long-time favourites. Although, I wasn't personally expecting The Streets' British rap "Fit But You Know It"! Of course, there are other bands/artists that Carl Barat has mentioned as influences that aren't on this CD; Rage Against the Machine (which, he says, inspired him to really want to be in a band), The Velvet Underground, The Kinks, Django Reinhardt etc. It's a decent collection of good songs...and, of course, it's essential for any Carl Barat completist to have!"
