CD Reviews

If Junior Walker played the harmonica...

(5 out of 5 stars)

"It's a safe bet to say that if Junior Walker played the harmonica, he would have sounded like Buster Brown (in fact, Junior recorded "Fannie Mae" for his "Home Cookin'" album in '69).Like Jr., Buster Brown was an old-school blues shouter who punctuated his songs with happy solos on his instrument of choice, in this case the harmonica. While Buster didn't have the pyrotechnics of Sonny Terry or the subtle mastery of Slim Harpo, he is pleasant to listen to nonetheless and this CD is indeed a joyous expereince. However, you might skip the several versions of Fannie Mae. One will suffice. But most of the other songs are great. He takes blues classics like "John Henry," "St. Louis Blues," "Raise a Ruckus Tonight," and "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby" and turns them into something all his own with his shouting vocals and pleasant harmonica and the small rocking band in the background.Unfortuantely, Buster did not record much aside from these wonderful sessions from (mostly) 1959 to 1962. But this is all the good stuff and contains everything from the 1962 Lp "New King of the Blues" and a few other sources. So this is really all the Buster Brown you'll ever need, and it's some mighty good stuff."
It's about time!

"Hey Charlie - do you think I can get my Buster Brown 45 back now. It's been forty three years for God's sake! And oh, by the way, I didn't leave it at your place. When I went to get my records to take them home, it was somehow missing from the stack. Guess it just slipped off the table right Charlie???

Thanks for taking such good care of it - - - now give it back!
