Synopsis

Product Description

Paspanga is the debut album from Burkina Electric, a group of musicians from Africa and Europe led by composer Lukas Ligeti, son of famed Hungarian composer Gyorgy Ligeti. Their music draws from the tradition and rhythms of Burkina Faso while incorporating contemporary electronic elements. Ligeti explains Burkina Electric's formation by saying, ' In the mid-90's, (we made) our first attempts at creating what could be called African electronica. On our travels to Burkina Faso we met the singer Mai Lingani and guitarist Wende Blass. Soon, we invited two dancers to help us draw audiences into our unusual rhythms and celebrate the continent's unseverable connection between music and dance.'

EXHILARATING FUSION of African music + electronica!!!

"Burkina Electric plays great traditional modern West Africa dance music, Ancient to the Future and vice versa. Based firmly in African traditions (including highlife and even a touch of juju) but not constrained by them, Burkina Electric be the brainchild of Lukas Ligeti (drums, electronics), Mai Lingani (singing), Pyrolator (electronics), and Wende K. Blass (guitar, background vocals. Paspanga is a bracing, dazzling chunk of vibrant, danceable Afropop with an avant-garde edge...but you more conservative types, don't worry about BE's avant leanings, you'll be too busy dancing to notice. Lingani has a commanding (though not overbearing), enthralling voice - she can coo with ingenuous wonder ("Mdolé," which btw recalls such UK outfits as Laika and Seefeel) or holler and trill like a Goddess of All She Surveys. By juggling and interspersing heartbeat-certain big-beat and snazzy sampling, Ligeti and Pyrolator prove that Them That Control Rhythm (not magnetism, as put forth by Chester Gould) controls the universe. The percolating guitar licks of Blass (presumably no relation to Bill) glisten like early-morning dew on lawns and flowers. (Dig his near-psychedelic Byrds-like solo on "Ligdi.") Paspanga is invigorating and fortifying as a gallon of real lemonade on a 90-degree day. Fans of modern African music, dance music, electronica: Dive in."
