Synopsis

Album Description
First time on CD for this 1956 album featuring three bonus tracks: 'Fascinating Rhythm', 'I Loves You Porgy' and 'Now's The Time'. On this album, DeFranco assembled a top flight rhythm section along with an equally top flight trumpeter in Harry 'Sweets' Edison to play a collection of real wailers! In addition to the standards, trumpeter Edison has contributed one of his own tunes, 'Sweet Blues'. As a complement to this splendid album, Definitive Records have added a rare session taken from a TV show, which also appears here for the first time on CD. It showcases DeFranco backed by a truly amazing all star group including pianist Sonny Clark, guitarist Tal Farlow, bassist Gene Wright and drummer Bobby White. 12 tracks. 2006.

CD Reviews

Very, Very Nice!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Everything in this album works to perfection, but two things really stand out: the arrangements and Buddy's subdued but ever-swinging clarinet. Most of these songs have been around the block more than a few times, but the fresh arrangements (uncredited) make them sound almost brand new (CHEEK TO CHEEK is an absolute delight). Buddy often has a tendency to show off his prowess on his ax by playing at lightning speeds, but here he plays relaxed and mostly in a medium vein (only NOW'S THE TIME is a true "wailer"), and the results are excellent. Sweets Edison is on trumpet and this time period finds him at his peak; the rhythm section of Barney Kessel, Jimmy Rowles, Bob Stone, and Bobby White is solid. Three bonus tracks taken from a broadcast featuring Buddy with Sonny Clark on piano and Tal Farlow on guitar are also included; all tracks are on CD for the first time. Guaranteed to give repeated pleasure with each listening."
