CD Reviews

I feel misled
Herb Shappard | Fayetteville, GA USA | 09/06/2000
(2 out of 5 stars)

"When I saw a new release by Bryn Terfel, I was very excited. He is the brightest new male voice I have heard in many years. But when this CD arrived, I found that I was listening to Bryn Terfel at twenty--not Bryn Terfel at 35. While Bryn Terfel at twenty was a pleasant voice, he had not developed the depth of tone or the control of dynamics that mark his work today. Had I known that the recording was fifteen years old, I probably would not have bought it. I will continue to search for more recordings by this great singer, but I hope not to be misled again."
A worthy collection

"A fine collection of material previously hard to find on this continent, mostly from original recordings on Bryn's Welsh label, Sain. Bryn's voice works well with this material (as does tenor John Eifion's) because it is the music of his heart, the songs of the mountains where he was raised, and where songs such as these are known by all. "Aros Mae" (The Mountains Remain) is one of the great anthems to the endurance of Wales, its language and culture, through the centuries. A real find.Dwi'n hoff iawn y recordiad hwn!Folks who enjoy this might want to find Bryn's fine CD "Bryn Terfel yn Canu Caneuon Meirion Williams (Bryn Terfel sings the songs of Meirion Williams). There is a bit of overlap - 3 songs I think - and on that recording the Welsh lyrics are provided (and I think the translations as well)"
Fine singing from a very young Bryn

"This is a charming collection. The opening duet with Bryn's tenor friend is enchanting. There are more duets to savor. These two voices blend beautifully, and each singer is considerate of the other resulting in a lovely stream of blended sounds. Many years ago (the 70s?), there was an American male duet ("Joe and Eddie") singing gospel/folk/jazz that was just superb. These two voices sound and blend in much the same way...a real pleasure.Bryn's solo efforts on the CD are also excellent...every bit of his voice and persona as we now know it is there in these 1984 to 1990 recordings. The songs themselves are delightful. The only complaint I have is that the lyrics are not given either in Welsh or English (or anything else for that matter) -- only song synopses are offered. This CD is a treat..a personal intimate outing in lovely music with a wonderful artist."
