CD Reviews

Relaxing guitar
An elderly guitarist. | Redmond, Washington United States | 05/07/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I bought this CD especially for "Farewell to Stromness," a piece written by knighted Peter Maxwell Davies, transcribed for guitar by Timothy Walker, and performed by David Russell. The piece is of a Scottish folktune, and written as part of a successful grass-roots resistence to the potential destruction of the picturesque town of Stromness in the Orkney islands in Scotland. The resistence movement was titled "The Yellow Cake Review"--the yellow cake was a reference to a uranium open-pit mining that was planned next to the town. The rest of the CD is a wonderful collection of 20 pieces played by Russell, the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, Pepe (?or Angel)Romero, and others, covering Bach. Sting (!) and others, and ending with Stanley Myers "Cavatina," the now well-known background music for the "Deerhunter.""
