He was rarely on the charts, but it's a rare big name in the genre who doesn't owe some part of his inspiration to him. Another reviewer has pointed out the timeliness of Bohannon's music. Only last week I was hearing something on a contemporary rock station, and its beat was pure Bohannon - the Bohannon Beat - a smooth, dancable, moderated tempo with a syncopated side beat. When you normally think of disco and funk, you think hot, but Bohannon succeeds in making disco and funk cool. When you're atuned to this beat, you can't help thinking, "Ah, Bohannon!" when you hear other artists pay tribute in their music to this underappreciated funk master."
