One of the reasons that Ernest Bloch is not more widely appreciated is probably due to the fact that his compositional output does not fall into any specific category. He was interested in many styles and is therefore hard to pin down. This CD offers a terrific cross-section of his work. "Four Episodes" consists of just that: colorful, fascinatingly scored miniatures. The first is jumpy, while the second is a passacaglia, with a tune repeated over and over again, with 24 variations played above it. The third, marked "Calm," is an oasis of peace and pastoral tranquility, and the last is exotic in its orchestral hues. Two Poems ("Hiver" and "Printemps") offer dark moments and utter tranquility, respectively; indeed, "Printemps" would make perfect movie music for, yes, a day in spring. The Concertino for Flute and Viola is, by turns, folksy and baroque, with notable Bach-like moments, and ends in a polka. The Suite Modale for flute and strings also pays homage to Bach and is a veritable bundle of contrapuntal composition but is full of expressive dance rhythms as well. The performances, with Dalia Atlas leading three different ensembles, are ideal. This CD is a sheer delight. --Robert Levine
