Synopsis

Product Description
Secretly Canadian is stoked to present you with ZOL!, the new BLK JKS ep just in time for The World Cup.

The title track is a traditional futbol chant set to BLK JKS unmistakeable and ever expanding repertoire. With a crazy head-bobbing beat and bassline, and rhythm guitar providing further jubilation and bounce, one can t help but be reminded that in many cultures around the world, the word for sing and dance are the same. Percussionist Tshepang Ramoba takes the lead on vocals here as the guys back him up on a call-and-response chanting and clapping session, raucously proclaiming I can roll and shoot at the same time. Mzbalazo takes the theme of chanting call-and-response to a new place where BLK JKS flip it on its head, introducing heavily distorted guitars and rock drumming. This is the sort of bold musical statement that separates BLK JKS from the pack. The spacious yet intimate BOGOBE contrasts sharply with the prog nature of PARADISE, a song that has shone live as the band has made their way around the world. For as dynamic as a collection as we might expect from a BLK JKS project, the ZOL! ep also serves as a much more succinct statement from a band settling in to their own skin.

Arty Rock from Jo'burg...

(5 out of 5 stars)

"South African experimental Rock quartet Blk Jks have been called the African TV On The Radio, thanks to their knack for blending Rock, Soul, Jazz, Electronica, African rhythms and just about anything else they can lay their hands on. They sing in English, Xhosa, and Zulu.

"Zol!" is a 5 track EP opening with the gently galloping stylish rocker "Lietys" with groovy bass and clattering beats and vocals meandering all over the place but still creating beautiful melody. "Bogobe" is a reverb-filled psychedelic acoustic ballad with crashing cymbals and beats coming in towards the final minute.

The melodic title track "Zol!" has a more traditional South African rhythm with call and response vocals. "Paradise" is an epic ballad, Jazzy and laid back or fiery (with squealing guitars) in turn, and closing is "Mzabalazo", Kwaito rhythms against a wall of distorted guitars, hand claps and sporadic chants.

Shame it all ends too soon. Also recommended, their 2009 debut "After robots"."
