CD Reviews

Have you never been Mellotron'ed?
h. delaware stephens | certainly not Silverlake | 06/04/2000

"This sounds like the sort of record Nick Drake would have made if he was summarily dumped by his girlfriend and decided to be more poison-penned and potty mouthed than pastoral and tragic. Probably the best Black Watch album. There's enough of their signature lush,left-handed, literately buoyant pop to be familiar to those that know them plus some of their finest songs ever, including "parachutes" with its wee, dreamy mellotroned chorus and the awesomely titled "uncheerupable" which makes you wonder why nobody named a song this before. good for you Juan."
A Must-Get...Tell Your Friends...

(5 out of 5 stars)

""The King of Good Intentions" is a beautiful, literate, stripped-down pop album that effortlessly swings from acerbic to clever and back again. Reference points for the uninitiated (note to uninitiated: Get Initiated!) might be The Go-Betweens and The Jazz Butcher, but this is an original in its own right that has to be heard. The strings are haunting without being overpowering, letting the songwriting stand on its own. This is a fully-realized album, the best of what was already a very good run of Black Watch albums, and it deserves some word of mouth."
