A great primer for the Laswell curious, but few else

"Bill Laswel is a producer's producer. He does the work no one else would think to do (The Last Poets, Pharaoah Sanders near-electric records, etc.), and doesn't merely hire out a bunch of beat-jugglers to give him tracks to put his name on top of; he's hip-deep in these tracks and you know Laswell when you hear it.This double CD set is an old retrospective of his some of his early outings with other artists and as a solo artist, and while the collection is a great primer for fans of his unique sound palette, a lot of the tracks show their age and some are even a bit out for even casual listening. Being able to play a pristine version of "Worksong" is, however, almost incentive to buy a used copy just for kicks. Not for the casual listener, but a must-have for fans of Laswell and those seeking to uncover the roots of his current world/ambient/dub music reach."
