Synopsis

Album Description
Based on heartbreaking pleas like "How Much Can a Man Take" and "I Have No One," Big John Hamilton occupies his own special place in the southern soul pantheon as archetypal obscure soul master. Until now, frustrating little was known of the man but all is revealed in this first-time overview of his ultra-essential sides cut for the Minaret label; from `67/'70. As if those Deep Soul classics weren't reason enough to welcome this collection, Big John proves across this set that he could do it all with characteristic aplomb; from southern-fried funk to hillbilly-soul.

Sweet Soul Music

(5 out of 5 stars)

"A fine collection of deep and country soul recorded between 1967 and 1971 for the Minaret label. This is great music, very reminiscent of Otis Redding on many of the cuts. The backing bands are terrific and this is a very good CD to add to your classic soul collection."
