CD Reviews

Vintage melancholy
morninghalo | Athens, Greece | 01/10/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"well, it's hard to be objective here - this is one of my favourite albums - i got it pretty accidentally, partly due to great rather minimalistic front cover art. i guess this is one of the albums where the front cover really speaks for the music, which is deep, sensual, sensitive, really moody, monotonous at times, but monotonous as breathing could be - you can find beauty and uniqueness in every breath.

there are some rather black metallish howls in 2 or 3 songs, staying on the background most of the time - most of the vocals are male, beautiful and deep, blending really nice with the sound of the trombone which also plays an important part in all compositions. lots of slow distorted guitars, a number of different percussion effects. most of the songs are slow.

i've heard of people comparing this band at the time of "pity love" with the "swans" as well as my dying bride, in terms of clean vocal style and atmosphere, yet beyond dawn are clearly different, less provoking than swans (my guess), less "heavy metal" than my dying bride - more melodic and inventive perhaps (my personal opinion)

lyrics are mostly on the dark side of a love affair - striken, sad

my favourite piece out of the album is "storm".

their next albums are much more adventurous in style, remaining quite romantic in nature as this one - i'd call this one more painfully poetic though.. :)"
